Occupying the Gaps is out

The book is out. Occupying the Gaps (틈새를 점유하기) came out on November 6 from Route Press and is now listed on Aladin, Kyobo and Yes24. As of today it sits at #35 on Aladin’s weekly art-essay chart. I’m not sure what thirty-five means exactly, but I’ve decided to read it as: not a book nobody knows about.

Briefly, what it is. It’s the first title in Slant, a new series from Route Press. It’s about the things I tried and failed at—an acting degree, modeling jobs, gallery work, graduate school, running a space. At the center of it is the time nine artists moved through a basement space in Gangnam. Eleven chapters, 176 pages, 110×175 mm. It fits in one hand.

I tried once before. There was a protocol book, published online, that gathered the B-cuts—the records that pile up in the process—to close the gaps. Some gaps stayed open. That’s when I learned there are places records can’t reach. This book is the last attempt, filling what remained with memory instead. It’s also why the site is called Unoccupied Gaps. The gaps nobody had occupied—this time I tried to occupy them with writing.

Kim Daewook edited and designed it. After the second proof I took my hands off. Unless it was a typo, I didn’t restore my own sentences; wherever the editor’s hand had passed, I left it. So the book is my writing and not only mine. I like that.

The book made its first appearance this weekend at Unlimited Edition, which closed today. The copies that passed hand to hand at the booth are probably in their new homes by now. I tend to believe a book becomes a different object when it’s handed over like that, so I’m glad I was there. For those who couldn’t come, the online bookstores remain.

If reading it leaves you with something to say, leave it here on the blog or anywhere else. Collecting those words is what I’ll be doing after this book.
